About the tour

Upper Dolpo Trek – A Journey Into Nepal’s Last Hidden Himalayan Wilderness

The Upper Dolpo Trek is one of the most remote, culturally rich, and visually extraordinary trekking experiences in Nepal. Hidden deep within the trans-Himalayan region of western Nepal, Upper Dolpo remains one of the least explored trekking destinations in the Himalayas, preserving a way of life and landscape that has changed very little over centuries.

This is not simply a trekking route—it is an expedition into a world shaped by ancient Tibetan Buddhist culture, vast barren valleys, turquoise alpine lakes, and isolated mountain villages surrounded by towering Himalayan peaks. The region’s remoteness creates an atmosphere of complete immersion, where every day feels disconnected from modern life and deeply connected to nature and tradition.

The trek passes through dramatic high-altitude terrain, crossing remote mountain passes, following ancient trade routes, and visiting villages where traditional customs remain deeply preserved. Prayer flags flutter above stone-built monasteries, yak caravans move slowly across the valleys, and the rhythm of daily life follows traditions passed down for generations.

One of the most unforgettable highlights of the trek is Shey Phoksundo Lake, Nepal’s deepest and most stunning alpine lake. Its deep turquoise waters, surrounded by cliffs and mountains, create a landscape that feels almost unreal. Combined with the spiritual atmosphere of ancient monasteries and the silence of remote valleys, the experience becomes far more than a physical journey.

The Upper Dolpo Trek is designed for travelers who seek depth, authenticity, and true wilderness. It is physically demanding, but the rewards are immense—offering solitude, cultural immersion, and landscapes unlike anywhere else in Nepal.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu (1,400m)

Your journey begins in Kathmandu, where you are welcomed and transferred to your hotel. The day is intentionally relaxed, allowing you to recover from your travels and settle into the environment. You may choose to explore nearby cultural sites, walk through local markets, or simply rest. In the evening, you meet your trekking guide for a detailed expedition briefing, where the route, logistics, altitude preparation, and expectations for the journey are discussed carefully.

Day 2: Fly to Nepalgunj (150m)

A short flight takes you to Nepalgunj in the lowland Terai region of western Nepal. The warmer climate and flatter landscape create a noticeable contrast to Kathmandu. The day is kept light, allowing you to rest and prepare for the journey into the mountains.

Day 3: Fly to Juphal (2,475m) – Trek to Dunai (2,140m)

An early mountain flight takes you into the remote region of Dolpo, offering beautiful aerial views of hills and mountain valleys. Upon landing at Juphal, the trek begins with a gentle descent toward Dunai, the administrative center of the region. The pace is comfortable, allowing you to ease naturally into the rhythm of trekking while observing village life and surrounding landscapes.

Day 4: Trek to Chhepka

Today’s trail follows river valleys and forested paths, gradually moving deeper into the remote landscapes of Dolpo. The environment feels peaceful and untouched, with waterfalls, pine forests, and small settlements along the way. The slower pace allows you to fully absorb the quiet beauty of the surroundings.

Day 5: Trek to Jharana Hotel

The trail continues through forests and narrow valleys, following the sound of the river as the landscape becomes increasingly remote. The atmosphere of the region feels calm and isolated, offering a deep sense of immersion in nature. The walk remains steady and manageable, giving you time to enjoy the scenery without pressure.

Day 6: Trek to Ringmo Village (3,600m)

Today you arrive at Ringmo, one of the most beautiful and culturally significant villages in Dolpo. The traditional stone-built village sits near the edge of Shey Phoksundo Lake, surrounded by dramatic cliffs and mountain scenery. The approach to the lake is unforgettable, with the deep turquoise water creating one of the most breathtaking landscapes in Nepal.

Day 7: Explore Shey Phoksundo Lake

This day is dedicated to exploring the lake and its surroundings at a relaxed pace. You may walk along the shoreline, visit viewpoints, or spend time observing the reflections of the surrounding mountains in the water. The peaceful atmosphere and absence of crowds make this one of the most memorable experiences of the trek.

Day 8: Trek to Sallaghari

Leaving the lake behind, the trail moves into more remote terrain. The landscapes become increasingly rugged, with steep valleys and alpine scenery dominating the environment. The sense of isolation grows stronger as you move deeper into Upper Dolpo.

Day 9: Trek to Nangdala Base Camp

The route gradually ascends through barren valleys and high-altitude terrain. The pace is kept steady and controlled, allowing your body to adapt naturally to the elevation. The landscapes feel vast and untouched, with very few signs of modern development.

Day 10: Cross Nangdala Pass (5,350m) – Trek to Shey Gompa

Crossing Nangdala Pass is one of the most challenging and rewarding sections of the trek. As you reach the top, panoramic views of the surrounding Himalayan ranges unfold in every direction. After descending, you arrive at Shey Gompa, an ancient monastery that holds deep spiritual significance in the region. The atmosphere here feels timeless and deeply peaceful.

Day 11: Explore Shey Gompa

A full day is spent exploring the monastery and surrounding landscapes. This slower day allows you to rest, acclimatize, and fully experience the spiritual atmosphere of the region. The combination of ancient culture and dramatic mountain scenery creates a truly unique experience.

Day 12: Trek to Namgung

The trail continues through isolated valleys and traditional settlements, where Tibetan-influenced culture remains deeply preserved. The walk feels immersive and reflective, with the quiet landscapes encouraging a slower pace and deeper connection with the journey.

Day 13: Trek to Saldang

Today’s journey takes you to Saldang, one of the largest villages in Upper Dolpo. Surrounded by barren hills and wide valleys, the village offers insight into the traditional lifestyle of the region. The environment feels remote and culturally rich, creating a strong sense of stepping back in time.

Day 14–17: Trek Through Remote Upper Dolpo Villages

Over the next several days, the trek continues through isolated settlements, high mountain terrain, and ancient trade routes. Each day offers changing landscapes, cultural encounters, and a deeper sense of immersion in the region’s unique atmosphere. The pace remains steady and comfortable, allowing you to fully experience the journey rather than simply move through it.

Day 18: Return Toward Juphal

The return journey gradually leads you back toward lower altitudes and more familiar landscapes. The descent feels reflective, offering time to absorb the experiences and memories of the journey.

Day 19: Fly to Nepalgunj – Return to Kathmandu

A scenic flight takes you out of the mountains and back toward Kathmandu. The transition from the remote wilderness of Dolpo back to city life feels dramatic, highlighting the uniqueness of the experience you have just completed.

Day 20: Departure

Your journey concludes as you depart from Kathmandu, carrying with you memories of one of the most remote and culturally rich adventures in the Himalayas.
