Poon Hill Trek – 4 to 5 Days | Annapurna Sunrise Trek in Nepal
The Poon Hill Trek is one of the most popular short treks in Nepal and an ideal introduction to the spectacular Himalayas. Located in the famous Annapurna region, this 4 to 5-day Nepal trekking adventure combines breathtaking mountain scenery, traditional Himalayan villages, beautiful rhododendron forests, and authentic local culture.
With a relatively short itinerary and moderate walking distances, the Poon Hill Trek is perfect for beginners, first-time trekkers, families, and travellers with limited time in Nepal. You can experience some of the finest mountain landscapes in the Annapurna region without committing to a long or high-altitude expedition.
Poon Hill Sunrise – A Spectacular Himalayan Viewpoint
The highlight of the trek is the early morning ascent to Poon Hill at 3,210 metres (10,531 feet). Rising before sunrise, you’ll hike to one of Nepal’s most famous Himalayan viewpoints and watch the first rays of sunlight illuminate the snow-capped peaks.
On a clear morning, panoramic views include Annapurna South, Annapurna I, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Dhaulagiri, Hiunchuli, Nilgiri and surrounding Himalayan peaks. The sunrise over the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges is an unforgettable experience and one of the main reasons the Poon Hill Sunrise Trek is so popular.
Trek Through Ghorepani and Traditional Himalayan Villages
The Poon Hill route takes you through the picturesque villages of Ghorepani, Ulleri and Ghandruk, where you can experience the traditional lifestyle and hospitality of the local Gurung and Magar communities.
Walking through the Annapurna foothills, the trail passes through beautiful rhododendron forests, terraced farmland, waterfalls and mountain landscapes. In spring, the rhododendron forests can be particularly spectacular when they are in bloom.
Overnight stays are generally in traditional Nepalese teahouses and mountain lodges, giving you the opportunity to experience local food, culture and Himalayan hospitality.
A Perfect Short Trek in Nepal
Unlike longer Himalayan adventures such as the Everest Base Camp Trek or Annapurna Circuit Trek, the Poon Hill Trek does not require weeks of trekking or extreme high-altitude experience.
The route reaches a maximum elevation of approximately 3,210m, making it a more accessible option for travellers who want to experience Himalayan trekking in Nepal without travelling to extreme altitudes.
The trek is suitable for people with a reasonable level of fitness. Although some sections involve steep stone steps, particularly around Ulleri, the established trails and relatively low altitude make this one of the most accessible trekking routes in the Annapurna region.
